DANCE REQUESTS

2014 PRESIDENTS` WEEKEND DANCE WORKSHOP

ALPHABETICALLY ARRANGED

Abdala  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMf8yXaQDiQ (Bulgarian, lively; fairly difficult) **
Above the Rainbow; Different dances are done to this. None on video matches ours. (It's the Irish dance Linda leads).*
Adama Ve Shamayim http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijKJV-ArTR4 (Israeli, fairly hard, but good video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE_6OdstJII a group dancing it ; no hands; progressively faster.**
Ada's Kujawiak  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBGdhWKW3jQ (Polish couple dance. We have a few styling differences from this performance, but the video is the easiest one to see; not too difficult to follow; fairly slow).*
Adjon az Isten http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X62JgV8CVxw Hungarian line dance; slow, very easy. I think Linda may lead this sometimes.*
Agir Halay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3nLH8gupA8 Turkish line; can't guarantee this is the dance; I'm guessing it's Margaret's request, but Orlando has a dance of this name, with music at this link: (not this recording) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxH-rcGnX18
Aj Lipo Ti Je  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvsUg-OGDk4 (easy, slow; I lead from behind)*
Ajde Jano  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_KFeQ6ngLs Serbian line; slow, easy. this is the closest video to the way we do it. *

Alexandrovsky http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKJtPHgPPTw   Russian couple dance; fairly easy, fairly slow. We used to it often when there were more guys; not recently taught or done. For some reason I recall that other Florida groups double each part, so the changes don't match the change in the music, but this sequencing makes more sense.*

Ali Pasha  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl2vmzUrefQ Turkish Line dance--Linda leads us. Some dancers mess up in video; follow the tall woman in sandals and, when she disappears, the tall man in black pants; easy dance.*
Alte kath (Zwiefacher)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq-hjwDeJ5A (German couple dance; Zwiefacher  means two kinds (of steps), which alternate indifferent combinations. In this example it's waltz, waltz, step, step,  etc. while always turning. For some Zwiefachers, it's hard to recognize the combination, which varies, but this one's easy if you can waltz)** (note: Germans pronounce ei with a long i sound and ie with a long  e sound--but in the regional idiom of Southern Germany, the word for "two" is  spelled "zwie," and the dance is pronounced tsvee-focker instead of "zwei," with a long i sound--as the person introducing the dance improperly does in the video. That confusion exists is understandable: here's another video of the dance that is introduced with one spelling and followed by the other! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4Kan3M-ypc

Alunelul  (Daniela):  no video; Daniela's Alenelu is very fast and complex, not the one we do. On 2007 camp video. I tried to teach it several years ago but would have to relearn it now.***

Boaliysko Horo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wymzF2XOFbc  Yuliyan Yordanov taught us this Bulgarian line dance a few years ago at dance camp. Poor video, but fortunately the dance is fairly easy. We have done it few times, but not recently.*

Cetvorka; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpQj9hmLh8Y&sns=em the silent video, contributed by Steve Turner, is of Atanas Kolorovski doing the dance 40 years ago. Macedonian folk dance, I think Margaret usually leads--or Joyce; quick, advanced; hard to follow if you don't know it. **
Cetvorno Horo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4Bm9A1OAEo (I know two different Cetvornos; this is the only one with a video--not counting ones danced by  Bulgarians, which have different steps; advanced; done occasionally; not taught) * *
Cha Cha España http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joiXbgJHOHM (Jack and Linda lead this dance of singles)*

Chef http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbZfd-6qzaM (advanced, with leg slaps and stamps, Romanian--Gypsy?; possible to learn with some effort--certainly worthy of an attempt! [but I don't have the music]) **

Cicino Kolo (I assume Cinino Kolo is a typo)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoxuUjzuADs (The dance starts at 4:13 on the video;  a bit difficult because quick and a number of different steps. Mairi's Wedding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRpLfLurI5s (Scottish: very complicated) ***

Mascatii  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed5u4GWGelU  ( Romanian.  I don't know if this is the dance that's requested; the hand-held camera makes it hard to follow, except from the sound of the stamping). Here's some more mascatiis, also in costume, evidently part of a winter festival http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnGMPpycgjc  )

Mavromata (one of ours that I'm blanking on; Greek. Julietta's, I think; easy, I believe. no video.) *
Melnik: The name of the dance is a town in Bulgaria; there is no video of the dance. The music in this link is very similar to the pace and mood and resembles the melody of the dance, so you can at least get an idea of what the dance is like: in a minor key, sad in feeling, and moderate in speed. That's the town of Melnik in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmYZnKWTMUI
Michael's Czardas; no video; Hungarian couple dance; Jack and Linda do it; I can follow it.**
Moj Dragane  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWROJIc0ruM (Julietta's dance; slow and easy; dancers appear late in video ) *
Moj Maro  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewOPQGSLreo (easy , slow Albanian; one of ours; led by Julietta and others) *
Moja Diridika  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXd4WSE2L18 This is the version I know, but the drmishes (the third step) are too exaggerated. Feet should stay closer to the ground. A nice simple circle Croatian dance (the explanation is a bit of overkill. For a dance with a lot of drmishes, look at the Slavansko Kolo  link below.  Here's another link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXd4WSE2L18 *
Momino Horo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBDgi2ZnaiU (Bulgarian; fast second half; moderately easy, but  the fast part may be a bit hard to learn from the video) **

Myatalo Lenche  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYz157PzPcU  (I don't know if this is the right dance, and the camerawork is terrible for seeing the footwork, although toward the end you get to see some feet; it's  a Bulgarian lively line dance)

Na Dvi Strane Kolo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxJZdOqw6rM Croatian line or circle; this only does one of the steps we do and only in one direction--and it's different music. Moderately easy. Here are the directions from our teacher,   Željko Jergan *

Olahos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4rdLmfKcig (Hungarian dance Margaret leads; energetic) *

Old Nick’s Lumber Room (set dance) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNJMANW8jvE  (The camera stays on the orchestra for a long time, but eventually gets around to the dancers; very hard to work out from the video) **

Oneg Shabbat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tynZkMBj61E (Israeli--with hand gestures. easy)  *
Ooska Gookas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPntUhp7EzI (music only on video; Armenian, fairly slow)

Orijent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma9CzzzT_Gg  (Serbian line led by a 95-year old lady in video; Linda leads us) *

Oves; Czech dance with bouncy beat; I could find no further information (except that oves means oats in Czech).

Paraliakos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_m7sYg2Uog easy Greek;  Julietta leads us; Otterholt on video*

Polonez Royale  (no online video that matches our choreography; taught by Richard Schmidt at 2006 camp and on that camp video; partner dance; a national dance of Poland; the following video isn't the choreography we do, but observe the style, with the foot extended before coming down on the accented first beat of each measure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3e1OH1BpjA Here are the directions that, from a brief study, appear to be the way we do it: http://www.folkdance.com/LDNotations/PolonezRoyale2004LD.pdf ; fairly complicated) ***

Postie’s Jig  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jIadq4M6xk (with broom) set dance; Scottish, I think. ***

Radomirsko Horo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqLiazeV6TI (no video of dancers, only the music; one of ours that Gary or Joyce Dewsbury leads; medium difficult. )**
Ravno Oro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JySP3urSxtk The music is different and the first part of the dance is too; but the second half is as we do it, Jack leads it for us; medium difficult. Unfortunately the video's fuzzy and poorly lit and not all of the dancers have the step right all the time. But hopefully it will remind you how the second part (the hard part) goes; taught by Yuliyan Yordanov at 2012 camp, so check camp video if you have one. * *
Reshil Cico da se Zheni; no video, here's the music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVRtZQxCImo; all I know is that it's Macedonian.
Roata din Bihor;  no video; Romanian; one of Mihai's. Margaret leads  it, but I don't remember which it is.

Rustemul de la Patulele: no video, Romanian; music has a quick, skipping quality, but I don't know the dance.
Rustemul https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3XP4-Y3A4c (Romanian line; one of ours, Linda leads, lively and somewhat difficult)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ND4ePo8nn8  (another video of it)**

Sano Duso http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNlqJJltcCs easy Serbian line dance. *

Sapari http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjUnyEhWcww   (Jim Gold teaches this Israeli line dance; moderately hard because of keeping track of multiple steps. Savila Se Bela Losa http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF2DZ3xnMNg (Serbian line; one of ours, very easy)*

Sestorka  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUN4XE8cSto This group does the dance like us, except they put four more steps in going to the left and then three steps in place instead of a crossing step. The higher step is used by most Bulgarians in quick dances. After a bit they switch to Daichovo (without the calls), and then some other dances in a medley. At any rate, you should recognize the dance, which we do. Medium difficulty. **

Setnja http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKIRAR0UNYA (very easy Serbian line; slow and fast parts; one of ours)*

Siriysko Horo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LF8GT2g5is (I lead this; he doesn't do the tricky part right) **
Slavonsko Kolo (Croatian line or circle, the steps appear to be: a. side-close, b. grapevine, and c. drmes variants, with a break in the music for a slow part. Very easy to follow, except the drmes step, with its <bounce bounce-bounce> rhythm, best seen here from 2:16-2:26. Here's a professional group. Check the drmes from 1:33 until the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lQUuptNjM  But if you can't get it, don't worry. Most dancers don't. Pat Henderson says we use a basket hold. Here are some directions: http://www.folkdance.com/LDNotations/SlavonskoKolo1957LD.pdf *
Somogyi Karikazo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZZy9zdL1hs Hungarian women's circle with men on outside, but not in this otherwise good video; here's one with the guys outside (and more inept): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX7_OSYBp_Q (we do it sometimes; easy)*
Soroc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v156Abp71Ak&list=PL0C9121A5FCD13EF0 (Romanian; one of Mihai's. somewhat quick, not hard) *

Stara Djurdjevka; Serbian line dance taught at the 2013 dance camp. No video or music online. It's an easy alternation of a series of rocking steps (like the Israeli tcherkessia step), followed by a series of grapevines (=Israeli mayim step), then the first steps followed by more grapevines, but quicker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkaw-E6PyKY *

Te Aven Baxtale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnS9FNNtekY  (Romanian gypsy, Jack and Linda lead it for us; the third step is a bit tricky; three of them and then 2 steps back)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPeChW13OXE Here's another video, more cluttered, but less blurry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Iomc-VoFGI (another video of it )**

Tokyo Polka http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JcofrSpIQM  this video for learning, and the Stanford Viennese ball for a different perspective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62puI49To7M Japanese singer; Richard Powers= American choreographer, I think. Individual dancers, medium fast. If you can do Cha Cha España, which has the same quarter turns between each part, you can probably manage this one. **

Trei Pazeste https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1A_6XSc_1M  (Romanian line, choreographed a bit for performance here, rather difficult; I lead it for us; not taught recently unless I teach it next week.

Trgnala Rumjana http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABJvnYvx_O8 (A candidate for the easiest dance of all. We do it occasionally. It used to be our final dance of the evening, lights out, except for a candle in the center of a circle of dancers.) *

Trip to Bavaria http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrG4YDem0xg ; strange name for a Scottish set dance, which it is. Looks complicated. Don't do it unless you have had some experience with this kind of dance, preferably this one.***

Tsamikos  (16 count) Greek line. There are actually several 16 count Tsamokos. I assume this requested one is the one we have been working on. No video and I don't have time to sort through the directions on line. If it's ours, you should know it; if not follow the leader. Medium easy.*

Turkish Ramo Ramo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pAzJQcIww4 individual dancers in lines Linda leads us. Video has different, slower music and one guy improvises a bit. Easy.*

Twelfth Street Rag http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eEf7JbAhNQ (American couple dance; one of ours. Wild video, but hopefully you can recognize it if you have done it before.)*

Vulpiuta http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9bxxYrStfA (There's a rocking step in this that is the way most groups do it that we don't. I lead or maybe someone else. Romanian line dance, quick, energetic, moderately hard) **
Ya Abud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il7M-H-N-XU (Israeli dance choreographed from Jordanian Arab music, Margaret lead it in our group. Because it's quick and there are five or six different steps, people can stumble a bit, but it's not too hard) *
Ya Da Kalinushku Lomala http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08D8P4boUpQ  (Joyce Story and Linda lead; Russian, not hard) *

Yalel; no video; no instructions; Jack leads us; medium difficulty; think of the camel step and the steps in a counterclockwise diamond shape in parts 2 and 3. **
